A Clinical Study on the Complications of Chronic Otitis Media

Abstract

|
38 cases of major complications of chronic otitis media experienced at the department of otolaryngology, Chungnam National University Hospital between Jan. 1981 and Sep. 1983 were reviewed.
Results are as follows
1. Most of all complications occurred in 2nd decade.
2. Major symptoms were increased otorrea, hearing disturbance, nausea and vomiting, headache, dizziness and otalgia.
3. Physical examination of the external auditory canal showed 14 cases(37%) of granulation polyp and 8 cases(21%) of post, bony wall destruction.
4. Major complications are
Complications in temporal bone
Subperiosteal abscess 18 40%
Facial paralysis 7 15%
Labyrinthitis 9 20%
Intracranial complications
Menigitis 7 15%
Lateral sinus thrombophlebitis 2 4%
Brain abscess 2 4%
Subdural abscess 1 2%
